The Foundation opened its doors in 1992, though the building itself dates to 1849—originally the largest synagogue in the United States, built to hold 1,500 worshippers. Spanish sculptor Angel Orensanz stumbled upon it in 1986 while hunting for studio space, pulled it back from the brink of abandonment, and reshaped it into what stands today: part working art studio, part cultural center, and undeniably one of Manhattan’s most striking wedding venues. Philip Glass, Spike Lee, Alexander McQueen, Maya Angelou—they have all crossed this threshold. Now it is your turn.
The historical capacity was 1,500, but modern event setups fall well short of that number. For a wedding with seated dinner and dancing, the calculation shifts entirely. I strongly recommend contacting the events team directly (https://www.orensanz.org/contact or check orensanzevents.com) to discuss your specific guest count and how it translates to this space.
The Angel Orensanz Foundation is not for everyone. It is dramatic, it is unique, and it requires confidence in your aesthetic choices. If you are still exploring options—or if you love the idea of architecturally significant venues but want to see what else is out there—here are some other spaces where we have created memorable celebrations:
