The Spaces (And What They're Actually Like)

Let me walk you through these rooms, because they’re not interchangeable. Each has its own personality, its own best uses, and—from a performer’s perspective—its own quirks.

The Great Hall (First Floor)

Your arrival moment. At 54 feet by 41 feet with a 55-foot ceiling, the Great Hall is the first thing guests see when they enter. Walls of variegated marble. A gold coffered ceiling that took my breath away the first time I saw it. That Venetian lantern they purchased from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. A grand double staircase framing five opalescent stained glass windows on one side, an immense marble fireplace on the other.
Capacity runs up to 250 for a reception. This is where you do cocktails. Within seconds of walking in, guests realize tonight is going to be something special.
From an entertainment standpoint, the acoustics in a space this tall are interesting. Sound travels up. We’ve learned to work with that, keeping certain elements focused and using the architecture to our advantage rather than fighting it.

West Lounge (First Floor)

One of the two main event spaces, and a showstopper. At 85 feet by 40 feet with 24-foot ceilings, you can seat 348 for a banquet or 240 for a dinner dance. The room borders Fifth Avenue, with red and grey marble fireplaces at both ends and four mirrored panels that reflect Central Park views.
The ceiling murals are Renaissance style. The color palette is burgundy and gold. Standing in this room, you feel like you’re attending a gala in 1894—in the best possible way.
For live music, this room works beautifully. The ceiling height gives us room to breathe without the sound getting lost. The layout accommodates a proper dance floor. Those mirrored panels create interesting visual depth for guests no matter where they’re seated.

The Library (Second Floor)

Intimate dinners for 20-80 guests, cocktail receptions up to 120. Oak bookcases line the walls. Stained glass windows filter the light. A working fireplace anchors the room. This space overlooks the club’s courtyard and has what I can only describe as a warm, embracing quality.
For smaller weddings or rehearsal dinners, the Library is exceptional. Members and guests favor it for good reason—something about being surrounded by books and wood paneling makes conversation flow more easily.

L.W. James Room (Second Floor)

Up to 200 guests in a bright, L-shaped room with eight floor-to-ceiling windows and ten crystal chandeliers. An alcove with a built-in bar sits off to the side, exactly as convenient as it sounds.
The natural light in here during daytime events is fantastic. For evening celebrations, those ten chandeliers create a gorgeous, sparkling atmosphere.

Governor's Room (Second Floor)

The Central Park view room. Capacity for 30-100 guests, with high ceilings, large crystal chandeliers, and an elaborately carved decorative fireplace. Central Park and Grand Army Plaza spread out before you through the windows.
For a ceremony space, this is hard to beat. Classical design, natural light, and views that need no enhancement.

President's Foyer & Ballroom (Third Floor)

The crown jewel. The foyer itself holds 220 for receptions, with portraits of current and former club presidents—including J.P. Morgan—lining the walls. The vaulted ceiling features stained glass and extensive gilding.
The President’s Ballroom beyond matches the West Lounge in size but adds tree-lined Central Park views. Renaissance ceiling murals. Two Baccarat crystal chandeliers. Extensive gold panelwork. Marble fireplaces. Rich burgundy upholstery.
Seated galas up to 340. Receptions up to 400.
I’ve performed here more times than I can count, and the acoustics are superb. The room was built for grand occasions, and it sounds like it. When you have live musicians playing under those Baccarat chandeliers with Central Park glowing through the windows at dusk, it’s the kind of moment people remember for the rest of their lives.

The Penthouse (Sixth Floor)

Something worth noting: the Douglas Brandrup Penthouse Dining Room and Terrace opened in 2007. It’s the first major construction since the original clubhouse was built, and it’s only available on Saturdays and Sundays.
A glass-enclosed restaurant offers unobstructed views of Central Park and the city skyline. An outdoor terrace wraps around 60th Street and Fifth Avenue. Capacity stands at 110 for dinner and dancing, 125 for seated dinners, or 200 for cocktail receptions.
For a more contemporary feel within this historic setting, the Penthouse delivers. That terrace, in good weather, lets your guests spill outside with cocktails, Central Park stretching out below them. Pretty spectacular.
